Private water supplies versus city water supplies

private drinking water

Private water supplies have become increasingly popular now for a number of years in the UK, with about 1% of all supplies now private. (data June 2009.) The reasons for this increased interest in private water supplies as opposed to mains water are many and varied but include such areas as:

  • Cost
  • Quality
  • Fluoridated water
  • Independence
  • Properties in remote areas

Let's take a closer look at each of these areas listed above.

Cost

As the UK prepares to install water meters in every UK home, and people start to understand that the cost of their water is going to increase, people start to ask the question: "What are my alternatives?"
Every water authority in the UK has proposals to increase the cost of the water they provide. It is most likely that every household will see a dramatic increase in the cost of their water once the meter system has been implemented.

Historically, we in the UK have enjoyed relatively cheap water in the past, with little or few controls over how we choose to use or waste it.

Whilst there is certainly a responsibility on us as water users to change our habits and develop a greater respect and regard for the water we use, there is of course, no correlation between water cost and water availability. The nation's water suppliers are attempting to scaremonger us into believing that water is becoming scarce through global warming, and so are increasing their charges accordingly.

This is of course a nonsense argument. Global warming is having an effect on the availability of fresh water it is true, but it is the volumes of water which we waste which is the key issue. Some estimates state that as much as 50% of the water which each household consumes is actually wasted.
Charging extortionate sums of money for water isn't going to generate more fresh water, it's simply going to create greater profits for the water companies, and greater hardship for many families and businesses.

Quality

Water authorities have a responsibility to its consumers to provide water which is on tap 24/7, and which is clean and suitable for drinking and does not contain adverse quantities of harmful chemical or biological agents.High levels of such contaminants in the water supply could cause sickness or even death, and in the worse case scenario, wipe out an entire population of a city in one stroke.
Not surprisingly therefore, our government imposes very strict regulation on water suppliers to ensure that a minimum standard of quality is maintained at all times. I think we can probably agree that in the UK certainly, our water supply is generally very good.

Fluoridated water
However, every silver lining has a cloud somewhere, and in this case the cloud goes by the name of Fluoride.
UK government directives as advised by the department of health and the British Dental Association dictate that fluoride must be added to our water supply at the rate of 0.1 parts per million in order to benefit our teeth. However, the actual amount of fluoride added to our water in the UK varies from 0.7 to 1.2 ppm. (Parts per million).
